Songbird (SGB) is the native token of the Songbird network, which serves as Flare Network’s canary network. Both Flare and Songbird, led by the Flare Foundation, aim to provide smart contract functionality for public blockchain assets that historically have not supported smart contracts. The project is collaborating with multiple major public blockchains with large user bases, with its partnership involving Ripple (XRP) drawing particular attention. Songbird functions as a canary network—similar to a testnet, but with tokens that are not infinitely supplied and therefore can hold real value—often compared to the relationship between Polkadot and Kusama. The Flare Foundation’s mission is to address two key issues: (1) that smart contracts are not supported on roughly 75% of public chains, and (2) that existing smart contract networks face scaling challenges.
