SYN is the governance token of Synapse, a cross-chain protocol that enables asset transfers and swaps across different blockchains. It is used for protocol decision-making and for paying network transaction fees. Synapse provides three core functions. First, it offers cross-chain communication, allowing users to transfer arbitrary assets or data between chains through the Synapse protocol. Second, it uses an Optimistic Security Model, which—similar to optimistic rollups—relies on fraud proofs when transactions are submitted via the bridge. Third, Synapse Bridge provides asset swap functionality across more than 15 chains, including Layer 1 networks such as Ethereum, Avalanche, and Fantom, as well as Layer 2 networks such as Optimism and Arbitrum.
