Overview
Walrus is an innovative decentralized storage network designed for blockchain applications and autonomous agents, developed to address the limitations of existing decentralized storage solutions. Walrus leverages erasure coding—a data replication and recovery mechanism optimized for storage efficiency—to split unstructured data blobs into smaller units called slivers and distribute them across a network of storage nodes. This design enables data reconstruction even if up to two-thirds of the slivers are missing, providing a storage service that combines the benefits of decentralization with strong resilience against data loss and faults. The WAL token serves as both the utility and governance token of Walrus and is used for platform payments, security contributions, and governance activities.
