Overview
Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is a Bitcoin-collateralized wrapped token designed to enable BTC to be used on Ethereum as the Ethereum smart contract ecosystem expanded. It initially began circulating under a model where BitGo acted as the custodian holding the underlying BTC, while entities such as Kyber Network and Republic Protocol served as merchants managing WBTC minting and burning. By being issued on Ethereum, WBTC aims to enhance security and expand utility, while also supplying additional liquidity to Ethereum-centric decentralized exchanges and dApps. WBTC was first issued as an ERC-20 token and also on TRON, and it has since continued to expand its circulation across multiple chains.
